Glossary A–Z
Every word we use in the guides, explained in plain language.
Basics
- IPTV
- TV delivered over your ordinary internet connection instead of aerial, cable or satellite.
- OTT
- "Over the top" – content delivered over the internet without the operator being involved.
- VOD
- Video on demand: films and series you start whenever you like.
- Catch-up
- The ability to watch programmes afterwards, usually 2–7 days back.
- Timeshift
- Pause and rewind a live broadcast that is running.
- STB
- Set-top box – a small box connected to the TV that does the work for it.
Login and credentials
- M3U
- A text file with the whole channel list. Usually delivered as a link you paste in.
- M3U8
- The same as M3U but in UTF-8, so Nordic characters display correctly.
- Xtream Codes
- A login with server address, username and password. Delivers channels, movies, series and EPG in one go.
- Server-URL
- The address the app connects to, for example http://server.example:80.
- MAC-adress
- The device's unique network address, for example 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E. Wi-Fi and cable each have their own.
- Device Key
- A short code that apps like IBO Player show alongside the MAC address.
- Device ID
- The box's internal identity, used by portal systems together with the MAC.
- Portal
- An address the box loads its whole interface and channels from.
Portal and middleware
- Stalker
- The middleware MAG boxes use to present the portal interface.
- Ministra
- The successor to Stalker. Same principle, newer version.
- Middleware
- The software between the box and the channels that controls menus, accounts and rights.
- Session
- An ongoing connection. An account allows a certain number of simultaneous sessions.
Video and audio
- H.264
- The most common video codec. Works on virtually everything.
- HEVC / H.265
- A newer codec that delivers 4K at lower bandwidth, but needs a device that supports it.
- Bitrate
- How much data the channel sends per second. Higher bitrate = sharper picture and more bandwidth.
- 4K / UHD
- Four times the pixels of Full HD. Needs about 25 Mbit and a 4K device.
- HDR10
- Extended colour and contrast range. The wrong setting sometimes gives a washed-out or dark picture.
- Dolby Vision
- An HDR format with dynamic metadata. Supported by some boxes and TVs.
- Hårdvaruavkodning
- The device's chip decodes the video. Efficient, but does not handle every format.
- Mjukvaruavkodning
- The app decodes the video itself. Handles more formats but needs more power.
- Buffert
- The part of the stream the app loads ahead. Too small a buffer causes stutter.
Network
- DNS
- The service that translates addresses into the server's number. The wrong DNS gives "cannot connect".
- DHCP
- The router automatically hands out IP addresses to your devices.
- NAT
- The router shares your external address between every device in the home.
- 2,4 GHz / 5 GHz
- Two Wi-Fi bands. 2.4 GHz reaches further, 5 GHz is faster and best for TV.
- Ethernet
- A network cable. The single most common fix for buffering.
- Mesh
- Several Wi-Fi units covering the home together.
- Paketförlust
- Data lost along the way. Causes stutter even when the speed looks fine.
- VPN
- An encrypted tunnel. It can both solve and create problems – switch it off while troubleshooting.
Programme guide
- EPG
- The electronic programme guide – what is on now and next.
- XMLTV
- The file format the programme guide is delivered in.
- tvg-id
- The code that links a channel in the list to the right row in the guide.
- EPG-offset
- A time adjustment for when the guide shows the wrong hour.
- UTC
- The world time guides are delivered in. Sweden is +1 or +2 hours.
Features
- Favoriter
- Your own list of the channels you actually watch.
- Kanalgrupper
- Categories in the list, for example Sport or Kids.
- PVR / inspelning
- Record programmes to USB or network, if the app and account allow it.
- Multiview
- Several channels on screen at once. Available in MYTVOnline and TiviMate Premium.
- Extern spelare
- Letting another app, such as VLC or MX Player, play the stream.
- Undertexter
- Subtitle tracks in the stream. Not every channel has them.
- Ljudspår
- Several languages in the same channel, switched in the player's menu.
- ProxyPass
- A technique that routes traffic through an intermediate server. It can help when an internet provider disturbs the connection – no guarantees, and no substitute for a stable line.
